What Barrie weather and housing mean for masonry.
Barrie sits on Kempenfelt Bay, off Lake Simcoe, and it gets a lot of snow: about 223 centimetres in an average year, with 157 days a year at or below freezing, according to Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 climate normals. For masonry that means a long season of water getting into joints and freezing. Chimney crowns, wall caps, porch landings and the top courses of a chimney take most of the damage, and salt from driveways and sidewalks adds to it at ground level.
The housing runs the full range. Allandale began as a railway village and was annexed by Barrie in 1896, and it still has Victorian brick homes. The older streets around the downtown have brick porches and chimneys that are now decades old. Newer subdivisions bring the other common jobs: poured porches that have dropped as the backfill compacted, and yards graded in a way that sends water toward the house.
Much of the ground around Barrie is sandy, stony and well drained, which is good news under a patio, a porch or a wall, as long as it is compacted properly before anything is built on it.

Barrie keeps a Municipal Heritage Register of designated buildings and buildings of heritage interest, and the city's Historic Neighbourhoods Strategy covers Allandale, Brock, Downtown, The Grove, Queen's Park and West Village. Allandale also has its own heritage urban design guidelines. If your house is on the register, the city asks owners to talk to its heritage staff before exterior work, and we are glad to join that conversation with the brick and mortar we plan to use.
Separately, some masonry needs a building permit. Under the Ontario Building Code, a retaining wall more than one metre high beside a public way, a building entrance or an area the public can use needs one, as does most new construction such as a garage or an addition. It depends entirely on the job, so we do not publish a price list: a chimney crown and a full brick re-clad are very different projects. What we do offer is a free on-site estimate anywhere in Barrie and a fixed written price with a start window, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.
If the wall is more than one metre high and sits beside a public way, a building entrance or an area the public can use, yes, and it has to be designed for that height. Lower garden walls in a private yard usually do not. We check your wall against the rules before we quote.
